As part of a larger project, Luke Military Base in Arizona will be adding artificial turf to its dog training unit. Natural grass is difficult to keep healthy in the hot Arizona sun but the artificial turf is durable and is easier on the dogs’ paws than bare pavement.

The artificial turf installation will save on water and maintenance and since it doesn’t need fertilizers and weed-killers, it’s greener than grass. A rain water collector and other eco-friendly items that may include solar panels are also on the base’s improvement project list.

"The artificial turf won't need to be watered, and unlike the turf on a mini-golf course, this grass is a mesh of fibers that have a realistic look and feel," said second lieutenant, Christopher Warshaw, the 56th's energy projects manager. "The MWDs (military working dogs) and the trainers will feel like they are on real grass. (edie.net)
