National Institute of Technology Rourkela Entrance GateNational Institute of Technology, Rourkela in Orissa, INDIA (NIT) (Hindi: राष्ट्रीय प्रौद्योगिकी संस्थान, रौरकेला), formerly known as the Regional Engineering College (REC), is one of the top premier national level institutions for technical education in India. NIT is a joint undertaking of the government of India and the government of Orissa. NIT Rourkela was established in 1961 under the able vision of the then Chief Minister of Orissa Biju Patnaik. Its foundation stone was laid by the then Prime Minister Of India Pt. Jawaharlal Nehru. NIT Rourkela was ranked as the best NIT in India by TEQIP for the year 2009.It is the 24th best engineering college in India.

Today, nearly fifty years later, NIT Rourkela continues to contribute significantly to the growth of the techno-economic strength of the country in a number of ways. It has produced high quality engineers and scientists, and continues to do so. Today, alumni of NIT Rourkela are doing well in various capacities as entrepreneurs, managers, technocrats, administrators, consultants, advisers and as faculty and researchers, both in India and abroad. At home, they are contributing to the growth of the techno-economic strength of India and also as entrepreneurs, thereby generating employment. Abroad, the alumni have enhanced the prestige of the Institute and the country by their excellent performance in their chosen fields. The amount of quality research undertaken at the institute is also phenomenal.

The institute is managed by the Board of Governors of National Institute of Technology (Rourkela) Society and vested with significant degree of administrative and financial autonomy. The government of India have recognised the institute as a premier institution of repute and have developed it as a center of excellence under plan funding. The institute has been modernised by two foreign collaborative funding agencies: the Material theme in the Materials and Metallurgical Engineering department under Indo-UK. REC project, and the Computer Science and Electronics streams under World Bank cum Swiss Development Corporation IMPACT project.

[edit] Location
The city of Rourkela came into prominence in the years 1954-55, with the decision of the government of India to set up the first public sector steel plant, Rourkela Steel Plant in this locality in collaboration with the then West Germany. The city is a huge metropolis connected with all parts of the country by railway and road. The population of the city is about 6.5 lakhs. The institute is at a distance of about 7 km from the railway station in between sector 1 and Bondamunda.

[edit] Infrastructure
The campus of the institute is situated at the eastern end of Rourkela steel city, beyond Sector-1 over an area of 2.62 km² of land provided by the Government of Orissa. The courses are mostly residential on a full-time basis.

The institute area is at the centre of the campus and surrounded by the residential areas. The Main Building of the Institute is central to the institute area and is surrounded by the departmental buildings. It houses all the classrooms, the Central library, and the Administrative and Academic sections. It also houses some departments like Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics and Humanities. All the departments, the lecture gallery, the workshops, the institute canteen and the audio-visual hall surround the main building.

Residential accommodation is provided to all faculty, staff and students. Lawns are found all over the campus, and the institute bagged the prize for having the most greenery and well maintained lawns among all the NITs in 2008. Quarters are alloted to all of the faculty based on their seniority. There are eight halls of residence for the students within the campus: four for male graduates, two for male postgraduates, one for all the girl students and one for married students doing doctorates or research. There is another restaurant-cum-canteen near the student halls of residence, along with an ATM, an ice-cream parlour, a general needs store and a barber shop.

The residential campus is equipped with a stadium which has been host for several national level university tournaments and is named after Dilip Tirkey, the former Indian Hockey captain who hails from this part of orissa. There are mutiple courts near the hostels for playing lawn tennis, basketball and volleyball. A swimming pool and a stadium dedicated entirely for cricket have been constructed. The estimated cost of the aquatic centre has been estimated to be 6.5 crores. The campus has all the amenities for developing personal, social and academic skills of the student community. The institute is one of the premier institutes that has supplied some of the best hockey, cricket , basketball, table tennis, football and athletics talents who have taken part in various state and national level games.

The campus also houses a Student Activity Centre (SAC), auditorium (Bhubaneshwar Behra hall), dispensary, co-operative store, post office, SBI Bank, computer centre, research centres[citation needed] and temples.

The overall environment is intellectually stimulating for the students of the full-time residential programs except the problem of air-connectivity and the problem of decent exposure .

[edit] Hostels =
The hostels also known as the Hall of residences are presently seven in number, the best of them being MSS Hall, previously known as Hall-5. Hall-6 houses post-graduates and Hall-1 is for married scholars, the rest of the halls are for unmarried scholars. The hostels have been refurbished recently and are now are in better conditions except Hall-7 also known as HBH, this hall is known for causing various disease among students, the water supply too is very poor and the overall quality of the civil/electrical work is found to be below average, despite the fact that the contract went to a reputed builder from Kolkata, the building quality can be adjudged from the fact the during the recent cyclone Cyclone Laila, a cantilever in front of the hostel fell over, the purpose of the cantilever structure though is not very clear.
