MANGALORE October 8, 2010: The Navaratri mood is up in the streets of Mangalore starting from today. The 20th Dasara celebration in Mangalore at the Sri Gokarnatha Kshethra, Kudroli was started today after a formal installation of the Navadurgi Vigrahas (The idols of the nine Durgas) in the noon at about 12 PM. Goddess Sharada’s idol was installed after a procession of the idol around the temple by the devotees. They carried the idol on their shoulders and they took the idol round the temple.
As the procession ended, the devotees gently placed Goddess Sharada’s idol on a grandly decorated stage and performed pooja. The Deputy Commissioner, Mr V Ponnuraj had taken part in the procession. He lit the traditional lamp as to formally inaugurate the event along with the Commissioner of Mangalore City Corporation, Dr. N. Vijayaprakash while the other idols were being installed.

Mr. Harikrishna Bantwal, developmental committee trustee of the temple said that the 10 day festival will be held with great pomp and gaiety. The grand procession that will take place on the 17th of October will mark the end of the Navaratri celebrations this year. He also added that the organizing committee has arranged for live performances of various cultural programmes by the leading artistes from October 8th to October 16th.
According to one high official of the temple, the procession will be starting from Kudroli and will pass through Mannagudda, Ladyhill, Lalbaugh, P V S Circle, Navbharath circle, K S Rao Road, Hampankatta, University college, Ganapathy High school road, Car street, Chitra talkies, Alake and back to the temple to join the immersing ceremony of the idols in the ‘Kalyani’ of the Kshetra and the festive season of Dasara would come to an end after the Durga Pooja tat will be held on the 18th of October at 8 PM.
The entire route that the procession will be traveling is well decorated and well lit up. The Kshetra has also made plenty of arrangements for the afternoon lunch on all the days of the Navaratri for the devotees who visit the temple and take blessings from the Goddesses. The shop owners and houses on the route to the temple were requested to hoist a Yellow flag which symbolizes the universal brotherhood spirit of Sri Narayana Guru.
Golden mask
A golden mask and silver coated doors were offered for the presiding deity of the Mangala Devi temple here on Friday, the first day of the Navaratri festival. Deputy Commissioner V. Ponnuraj did the honours Temple authorities had ordered the creation of a mask of gold for the idol of Goddess Mangala, and the silver doors for the entrance of the temple. Temple authorities received donations from devotees in both gold as well as currency for the mask, which weighs 2.5 kg, and cost Rs. 30 lakh to make, according to a press release.
The devotees contributed for the golden mask. Nearly 40 kg of silver was used to make the doors, which cost about Rs. 30 lakh. Hundreds of devotees thronged the temple on Friday morning as it was the first day of the festival, and witnessed the offering of the mask and silver doors to the idol. The mask was taken around the temple thrice before being offered to the deity.
