New Delhi: And as the Congress comes under growing pressure to act against those tainted by the Adarsh Housing Society scam and the Commonwealth Games corruption scandal, party leaders from across the country meet on Tuesday for an All India Congress Committee (AICC) session to elect and nominate general secretaries for the Congress Working Committee, the party's highest decision making body.

A political resolution is expected at the end of the day-long session. But the question being asked by many is - Will the party rise to the challenge it faces of salvaging its image?

Mumbai's Adarsh Housing Society was initially promoted as housing for war veterans and widows but is in the eye of a storm for violating environmental and other norms and misusing the land granted to it. (Read: No green clearance for Adarsh Society?)

At the centre of the controversy is Maharashtra Chief Minister Ashok Chavan.

Demanding the dismissal of the Maharashtra government for its alleged involvement in the scam, BJP chief Nitin Gadkari on Monday said there seems to be a "constitutional breakdown" in the state as possible replacements for Ashok Chavan also face corruption charges. (Read: 'Chavan govt has broken all corruption records')

Gadkari took dig at the Congress, saying it was caught in a dilemma about removing Chavan from the Chief Minister's post as it could not find a party leader with a clean image to replace him.
