Why Bakrid is Celebrated?
Bakrid is commemoration of the sacrifice of Prophet Ibrahim (Peace be upon him). Once Allah, the Almighty, tested his faith and obedience of the Prophet and asked him to sacrifice the most dearest person to Him. Ibrahim (pbuh) at once ordered for sacrifice of his son Ismail at Mina near Mecca. He had such a great faith that he was ready to do anything for Almighty Allah. It so happened that when the sword was put on the throat of the little child, the Lord revealed that it was just a test. He could sacrifice a ram or bakr instead of his son. Thus, the celebrations are mark of great faith in the words of Allah.
The Ritual of Bakrid
On this day a goat is sacrificed in the name of Allah. A fully grown sheep or goat, free from disease, is considered for sacrifice and then offered. The sacrificed offering is divided into 3 parts: The first part is set apart for family members, the second part is sent to friends and relatives and the third part is distributed among the poor and needy. The Law book of Quran enjoins to provide meals to the poor on this day.
Id-Ul-Zuha Celebrations
This day is celebrated with great enthusiasm and devotion by Muslims. Men and women dress up in new clothes and go to mosques. They offer prayers for the peace and prosperity of all Muslims. Then sacrifice is done in the name of Allah. The sacrifice is done at any time before afternoon and prayers are offered. Poor people are fed sumptuously. Muslims visit the houses of their relatives and friends and exchange gifts.
