Lakhs of people from Bihar, Jharkhand and Eastern Uttar Pradesh worshipped the rising sun at the banks of rivers.
They offered ceremonial 'Arghya' (the ritual offering of water) to the rising sun.
Chatth is also known as Surya Sashti. Women of the family fast during the chhath and prepare special prasad consisting sweets and Thekua( which is made of sugar and flour).
People worship Sun so that their wishes are fulfilled.
Women break fast after worshipping the rising sun on the third day of Chhath puja.
In New Delhi, Arrangements were made at nearly 40 Yamuna ghats for Chhath puja.

Water and electricity arrangements were made at the ghats. Tents, chairs and mobile toilets were also arranged for the devotees.
Property security measures were also adopted including presence of police personnel. Doctors and ambulances were also present.
In Patna, lakhs of people thronged the bank of river Ganges, took holy dip, before they offered prayers to the rising sun.
RJD President Lalu Prasad's wife and former Chief Minister Rabri Devi performed chhath puja with their close relatives at their official bungalow.
Prasad, on the occasion, said that the Centre should recognise the three-day chhath festival as national festival and declare holiday accordingly.
Chief Minister Nitish Kumar's relatives also performed chhath at his official 1-Anne Marg residence.
Hundred of politicians visited CM's bungalow to exchange pleasantries.
Special arrangements were made by the district authorities in Patna for the festival.
